Does it happen to you that you see a film and some speeches or characters make click with you?
Well, it happens to me sometimes. The phrase in the title is from the film "The Holiday". I like watching that film as it reminds me of a time when I was blindfolded in love with someone that didn't truly love me back and, as for Iris, it took me a long time to finally move on from an unhealthy relationship.
My favorite dialogue is when Iris explains how she "miraculously stop being in love" with the "smack" that used to be her boyfriend, cheated on her, continued being friends and tormented her after years of twisted friendship saying "I don't want to lose you, babe" at the time he was engaged with someone else.
After a great speech about ending with the twisted relationship, I totally loved it when she kicked him out of the house, and decided to live a life without him in it. She celebrates with open arms and big smile feeling free and brave. Oh, what a wonderful feeling!
In the Next scene she meets her neighbor and friend and says: "I'm looking for corny in my life". Those two moments in the story made me connect with the character as I was experiencing similar issues when I decided to move on from a sad life and chose to make big changes for this purpose. I was looking for a more enjoyable life, I was looking for corny in my life.
I went to England after a few wake up calls that made me decide to change the way I was living by then. When I was in Hastings, I started living a completely different life, I was having fun with friends, I was recovering my self-stem and little by little the light in my eyes came back.
Those mornings when I saw myself on the mirror and I couldn't recognize the woman in front of me where over. That old, stressed, sad, fake blond woman that was in the mirror before, she finally faded. I was free.
The magic in films, books and stories in general, emerge when they knock at doors that we recognize. There are moments or situations that feel familiar, characters that show emotions we are having or have had at some point. When the writers present obstacles that we have seen in front of us before, or dreams we shared with the person in the story, that makes us connect.
I can only conclude that I admire those writers and directors that have the ability and talent to connect their words and scenes with our minds and emotions. What a wonderful gift, don't you think?
Love,
Ana
